When considered logically, there are two things needed for computer data. The first is that the owner can always get at it and the second is that no one else can. In computing terms, this falls under the field of data recovery and protection. In an ideal world neither of these would require a second thought, but in the real world, it's something which should be seriously considered.

• Data Recovery

The average hard disc consists of platters of glass, spinning faster than a car engine at red line. The heads that read the data fly over the disc. It's why a hard disc should not be moved when it is in operation.

Manufacturers quote reliability in terms of hours before failure. They are saying that hard discs are going to fail. This means, when the inevitable happens and the disc dies, some form of data recovery will be required. Roughly speaking, there are two types of failure a hard disc can undergo - hard and soft.

• Hard Failure

This is where something went wrong and those flying heads hit the spinning platters. Depending on how hard it hits, this can have a minor effect of scraping some of the coating and losing the data it contained, up to damaging the head, effectively rendering everything on that platter unreadable. Recovery from such a situation is not easy and rarely complete - something will be lost. This is a job for professionals or at the very least, the local neighborhood geek.

• Soft Failure

Though, on the face of it, soft failures seem a lot worse in that they usually present themselves as a total hard disc loss. In reality, the only way to truly protect computer data is to disconnect it from any computer networks, turn it off and then put it in a locked room. This, however, has the effect of somewhat limiting the computer's usefulness. Fortunately, there are a few ways these risks can be offset.

• Passwords

Make use of the built in password protection most operating systems have to offer. Also consider what is chosen as a password. Don't pick a dictionary word, a pet's name or any other easy to guess string. Mix some numbers and punctuation in there, if the system will allow it.

• Physical Protection

Reformatting a hard disc does not remove the data from it. Data recovery techniques can get the data back from a full format within 24 hours. When a PC is sold, the data must be securely erased. If unsure how to do this, it's time to speak to the local geek again.

• Conclusion

Manufacturers and software writers have spent thousands of man-hours considering data recovery and protection. There are systems in place to make things as secure and durable as possible, but if these systems are not used, it is possible private data will be available for anyone who wants to help themselves. It is advisable to spend at least a little time checking what is available for a particular system and seek advice from a professional or more knowledgeable person if needed.

Apple 1 computer and Steve Jobs report sold at auction

A rare working Apple 1 computer and a report written by Steve Jobs went under the hammer at Sotheby’s New York yesterday. The vintage computer, one of only six known functioning examples, sold for $374,500 (£240,929) – more than double the price estimated by the auction house.
Hand-built by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, the Apple 1 originally retailed for $666.66 (£426), and comprised of a logic board only – buyers had to add their own case, power unit, keyboard and monitor. The auctioned model, one of around 200 made, included an Apple cassette interface, operation manuals and a rare BASIC Users’ manual.
BBC News reports that there was a battle between two parties for the Apple 1. The identity of the winning bidder has not been revealed.
A four-page report, which Steve Jobs created during his employment at Atari in 1974, sold for $27,500 (£17,496) – a significant increase on the expected $15,000 (£9,543). The pages detail the late Apple CEO’s ideas for improving the soccer arcade game World Cup.

Apple’s founding documents, which feature the signatures of Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ron Wayne, sold at Sotheby’s for almost $1.6 million in December.

Contest: Beta test Atmo and win a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0

Those of you that have been around Android since the beginning will likely remember the Android Developer Challenges. They were app development contests sponsored by Google back in the early days when Android did not exactly have a bountiful supply of apps. Well one of the finalists in the second of those contests was Door 6 with their 3D space flight game Atmosphere: Trainer which they later refined into the tunnel racer Vacuum which is still available in Google Play and I will personally attest can be highly addictive.
Well the guys at Door 6 have continued to work in a similar vein since then and are now ready to take the wraps off their latest creation which they are calling simply “Atmo.” While you can see the fingerprints of those earlier titles on this one it is an enormous leap forward from either of those games and the team has even bigger plans for the title going forward. Door 6 sees the focus on pushing out tons of casual games to see what can grab users attention as an unfortunate trend in mobile gaming and prefers to concentrate on delivering higher quality titles with the kind of depth that a traditional gamer expects.
When it launches in Google Play early next week, their new game Atmo puts the player again in the cockpit of a spaceship (now armed with lasers) and pits them against other players in a real-time multiplayer game of capture the flag. You start on opposite ends and must raid the other side blowing up capsules hunting for their “flag” which must then be returned to your goal without getting yourself blown to bits. You receive 30 points for capturing the flag and 2 points for each kill.

As I said, this is just the beginning of what Door 6 has in mind for the game. The first features they will be looking to add on are a ranking system to allow players to level up, achievement rewards and easy game pairing with Facebook friends. Further down the line they will be opening up the world for players to explore and will be adding an economy to enable users to customize and enhance their ships with new features ranging from additional thrusters to autonomous drones and more.
Also worth noting, despite our natural Android leanings, is that the game will be available on both Android and iOS and players from either platform will be able to face off against one another. Door 6 developed the game engine that they are using in-house and may in fact look to license that out at some juncture.
I’m sure you are chomping at the bit to hear about the contest at this point so I’ll get to that already. The guys at Door 6 were interested in having some folks check out the game early and give them some feedback on it. My Xbox Live lands on Android

Ever since Microsoft’s My Xbox Live app first arrived on iOS, I was dying to get my hands on a version of the app for Android. Today, the good folks from Redmond have made that dream come true.
The launch of the Android version of the My Xbox Live app is bittersweet. While it is nice to see the app finally hit Google Play, it’s missing some key functionality.
After signing into the My Xbox Live app, Xbox Live users can check out the latest game trailers and promotional videos Microsoft has to offer, update their profile and avatar, manage messages with friends and flick through achievements and trophies earned through various Xbox games.
My Xbox Live for Android looks amazing. It’s smooth and intuitive. It just lacks some of the most important features the app has to offer on other platforms, like the ability to tether your device to your Xbox and use it as a remote. With the update made available to the iOS My Xbox Live app, iPhone users are able to browse a list of their most recent activity from the app, and use the remote function with media apps like Netflix.
Microsoft hasn’t laid out any plans to bring remote functionality to the My Xbox Live Android app, and with Xbox SmartGlass right around the corner, it might not be any time soon. I wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft waited until SmartGlass to release any major updates for Android users.
